Memory Part Qualification
You begin by dusting off the schematics for the board design. There is a good chance that the designer has moved on to other projects or another company, taking most if not all tribal knowledge with them. Even if you are the original designer, you need to re-familiarize yourself with the finer details of the board design. You dig in only to find that you have to go with a new memory topology, or quite possibly a newer DDR technology such as moving up to DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4. But you get the schematics updated and build a handful of prototypes and begin the process of qualifying the new memory part. This time though, you chose a few memory parts hoping to avoid another redesign in four years.
The critical next step is to find optimal DDR settings for each new memory part, settings that work form -40 degrees Celsius to +80 degrees Celsius. Either you spend weeks over a scope getting optimal DDR settings, or you hire this work out to an expensive contractor.
