Testing a Million DDR Memories
Whether you are building one hundred embedded devices, or building a million embedded devices, you always want to know that DDR memory is calibrated and working perfectly. If your final product relies on DDR memories, which is almost a given these days, ideally you want to verify that every cell of memory is functioning perfectly. The three most common challenges are:
- Automating the calibration of DDR settings based on unique board characteristics. Every board built may be slightly different as far as trace lengths and other crucial DDR properties.
- Testing every cell, and every single bit, of DDR memory. And doing so in a reasonable amount of time per device under test.
- Fitting a DDR test process into your current production test flow, without having to alter earlier or later production test steps.
One way to address these challenges is to develop custom test software that fits nicely into your production test flow. A common plan is to use the existing application with additional test functions, and then develop a way to automate the calls to these functions. This plan provides a solution that tests most of DDR memory, but not all of DDR memory, since the application software uses DDR memory. Writing a stand-alone application (runs without an operating system) solves this issue, but requires significantly more expertise in low-level firmware and requires developing and testing additional code, beyond your application software.
